Rope making workshop with Gem Bowes (AG87) from Tightrope Knots

We were delighted to welcome alumna Gem Bowes (AG87) to a backstage club session on 17 June 2026. Gem originally trained in theatre set construction but, more recently, she has turned her creative skills to making rope, using traditional heritage craft techniques.
Gem brought in a rope-making machine, which she built herself and, following a brief demonstration, she taught our backstage club members how to use it to make rope from yarn. The blue and white rope that we made during the session was spliced into cord belts, which were worn by our Year 8 cast in their production of ‘The Labyrinth’.
