We want you to enjoy your English lessons, develop a love of reading that stays with you throughout your life and grow into a confident writer and speaker and a sensitive listener.

Our syllabus was written by all the members of the English department and we revise it every year. It is based on the National Curriculum and prepares students for the IGCSE but goes far beyond the National Curriculum in its scope.

In each year, we study a play by Shakespeare, a novel or collection of short stories and a selection of poetry chosen by the teacher.

The English syllabus is divided into three parts: reading; writing; and speaking and listening. This core syllabus remains the same for each year of Key Stage 3, although it increases in complexity as you move up the school.

The texts we choose become more challenging and Year 9 is spent working towards the standards required at IGCSE.
