 # Mathematical understanding

### Maths allows us to become fluent in a universal language, which underpins both complex technology and everyday life. It equips us with a range of important skills – numeracy, logic and problem-solving – and opens up an exciting world of challenge through our exploration of its patterns, laws and hidden connections.﻿﻿

We aim to develop each student's Maths ability to the highest possible level to foster an interest in the subject and to encourage everyone to see the relevance and importance of maths in everyday life.

Year 7
The aim of  Year 7 is to reinforce and extend the work covered in primary school Maths. The emphasis is on a non-calculator approach and consolidating number skills.

Some of the skills students learn include:
• Whole number arithmetic and order of operations
• Long multiplication
• Fraction concepts
• Properties of integers
• Angle theorems and properties of quadrilaterals
• Ratio and proportion
• Constructions and 3D objects
• Probability
Year 8
In Year 8, the syllabus builds on Year 7 work and extends it to topics that are new to many students. The emphasis is on developing basic algebraic skills.

Some of the skills learned will include:
• Written calculations including decimals, and estimation
• Geometric reasoning and symmetry
• Data handling concepts
• Brackets and equations
• Using formulae and expressions
• Using and applying ratio
• Introduction to financial mathematics
Year 9
The Year 9 syllabus introduces students to some higher order topics such as three-dimensional trigonometry and factorising and solving quadratics.

Some of the skills learned will include:
• Revision of indices
• Revision of Pythagoras and Bearings
• Formulae
• Polygons
• Quartiles and cumulative frequency
• Percentages
• Straight lines
